How Eavesdropping Led to Audrey King’s Romance Book

Whether it’s in the supermarket or the airport or the dentist’s office, we all eavesdrop. But it’s likely to be a passing experience. Not so for independent writer Audrey King. A conversation she heard in a gift shop combined with the romantic atmosphere of the town where the shop was located inspired her latest romance book, “Love As It Seems.”

In this Q&A, King talks about why writing has always been important to her and what she likes and dislikes about the writing process.

Q: What is “Love As It Seems” about?

A: It’s about a loyal wife and mother who is desperate to fix her marriage until one small mistake reveals a truth that changes her life forever.

Q: How did you come up with this story? What inspired you to write it?

A: I wrote “Love As It Seems” years ago for my own entertainment when my children were all teenagers. One day, my husband and I decided to get away from the house full of pubescent kids and visited the historic downtown district of our hometown.

The plaza was cobble-stoned with old-fashioned lanterns dotting the walkway—a place full of history where most of the town’s law offices took up residence inside the old buildings.

There was one particular gift shop that caught our attention with an ornate wrought iron gate and inside were the most unique gifts one would never find any place else. As we walked around the store, I overheard two women (one which I assumed was the owner of the store) talking about failed relationships. I didn’t stick around to listen to the entire conversation, but with that and the romantic atmosphere of the plaza, everything my brain soaked up in one day inspired me to write “Love As It Seems.”

Q:Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

A: I’m a keen observer and a “semi” extreme introvert—even as a child. Nearly all of my experiences and observations are woven into my writing in order to make room for more experiences and observations. Writing is my outlet, the only way I can direct my thoughts outward and three years ago, I decided (on a whim) to publish my outlets.

Q:What do you like and dislike most about writing a book?

A: To get it out of the way, I dislike the editing part and all my readers can agree with that, but I love the rest of the writing process, especially organizing my ideas for the plot.

Q:What's the biggest lesson you learned during the publication process of this book?

A: Hire a professional editor even if it means eating canned soup for a month!
