Two small publishers are open to unagented and unsolicited submissions within the next few weeks. Tayen Lane Publishing is seeking short stories for two anthologies until the end of March, while Black Balloon Publishing will consider manuscripts in April. Both companies publish a wide range of fiction and nonfiction books.
Tayen Lane Publishing
Tayen Lane, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, says its mission is to challenge the status quo by publishing provocative, beyond-the-mainstream books.
Articulated Press, an imprint of Tayen Lane, publishes young adult and literary fiction of all lengths: novels, novellas, anthologies, short story collections, and serials. Articulated Press aims to “reflect the modern, diverse, and interconnected world of which we are part, and actively seek to represent international voices.”
The publisher is seeking manuscripts for graphic novels, young adult fantasy and science fiction works, children’s books, and nonfiction books. Articulated Press is also looking for short stories for two anthologies—one for literary fiction and another for science fiction. Deadline for short story submission is March 31, 2016.
Black Balloon Publishing
Black Balloon Publishing is an imprint of Catapult, a New York publishing company. “We celebrate crossing genres and embrace new forms of storytelling,” according to the publisher. “We use our freedom as an independent publisher to take risks and collaborate, rewrite industry rules, and diversify the selection of books available to readers today.”
Black Balloon will read unagented submissions in April and October. It is seeking literary fiction, memoir, and nonfiction manuscripts.
