If you write thrillers, this competition sponsored by St. Martin’s Press might be just the thing for you. The Big Five imprint will choose five winners in the writing contest promoting “A Divided Spy,” a new novel by Charles Cumming.

To join the contest, write up to 1,000 words of fiction or nonfiction essay about the impact of trust (or distrust) on your life. “How has trusting a family member, friend, or stranger affected your life?” said the publisher. “Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, style, and integrity.”

You must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the U.S. or Canada (except Quebec) to be eligible. The five lucky winners will each receive these prizes:

  • Publication of the winning essay as part of the paperback and electronic version of “A Divided Spy.”
  • $250 cash prize.

Cumming is the author of several spy novels, including “The Spanish Game,” “A Foreign Country,” and “The Trinity Six.”

His forthcoming novel, “A Divided Spy,” focuses on the theme of trust. “Throughout the book, new and old confidants surround ex-spy Thomas Kell, providing him with sensitive information, and he doesn’t know whom he can trust until the end of the book,” according to the publisher.

You have until Jan. 17, 2017, to enter the competition. Read the contest guidelines here.
