If you’re a writer seeking publication, take advantage of the summer months to submit your work. These four small publishers welcome unagented submissions of literary novels, mystery, romance, fantasy, and science fiction.
Soho Press (Literary)
This New York-based boutique publisher accepts literary novels from authors without agents. “In general we are interested in bold voices and original ways of seeing the world,” according to the publisher. Soho Press authors include the award-winning Haitian-American novelist, Edwidge Danticat (“Breath, Eyes, Memory”).

Felony & Mayhem (Mystery)
This New York publisher’s slogan is: Make your own mayhem! Submit mysteries with a word count of at least 75,000 words. No short stories and novellas, please. “We love wit, we love elegance, we love distinct narrative voices,” says the publisher.

DAW Books (Fantasy, Science Fiction)
This Penguin imprint, founded in 1971, is a pioneer in publishing fantasy and science fiction exclusively. Your manuscript should be at least 80,000 words long. DAW requires an exclusive submission for at least three months. Submit your completed manuscript via snail mail.
Wild Rose Press (Romance, Women’s Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Historical Fiction)
Wild Rose Press is a traditional, royalty-paying publisher of romance and women’s fiction. It also welcomes mystery, thriller, historical fiction and erotica. Wild Rose will consider works that are from 7,500 words to 100,000 words in length. Submit your query via email.
