The holiday frenzy is here. As a writer and avid reader, I can’t help but make a case for books as the perfect gift. Here are 10 reasons why you should give books to your loved ones this holiday season and all other occasions.

1.     Books make us live longer. A research published in Social Science and Medicine shows a correlation between reading books and living longer. Readers live two years longer than nonreaders.

2.     Books are our reliable friends. Give your loved ones something they can always count on and read over and over.

3.     Books make us happy. Put it from another perspective, a good book makes us less lonely.

4.     Books help support our local indie bookstores. Buy a book from an independent bookstore, which makes a community richer by stimulating the local economy and providing a local cultural and social hub.

5.     Books make us nicer. It’s called empathy. Research shows that books help us understand other people’s point of view, according to The Untold Power of the Book report.

6.     Books are cheaper than a roundtrip plane ticket. They will transport your loved ones to their favorite destinations at little cost.

7.     E-books are cheap. They won’t break your budget. And, unlike a fruit cake, they won’t go bad either.

8.     E-books don’t need to be wrapped! It will help you save time and reduce your stress.

9.     E-books can be delivered at the last minute. It’s the procrastinator’s best friend.

10.  Books help support your favorite authors. Buy a book written by a living author who needs your support more than the estates of J.D. Salinger, Harper Lee, Ernest Hemingway, and other legends.
